Paying $249 for a Louisiana Address You Can Rent for $99

The Name Carries Weight, and That Is Fair Enough

LegalZoom is the label most people can produce when asked to name a company that does business paperwork. Two decades of advertising bought that, and recognition is not nothing. If a founder wants the vendor holding their statutory appointment to be one their accountant, their banker, and their brother-in-law have all heard of, that is a defensible preference, and mocking it would be cheap.

$249, Automatically, Every Year

The rate is $249 a year, flat, and it renews itself unless you intervene. Our July 2026 check turned up no introductory discount to soften the first invoice, which at least means there is no step-up ambush later. The number on the first receipt is the number on the ninth.

It is also the steepest flat number in this market, and the thing being purchased is unusually well defined. Louisiana does not grade an agent on brand equity. It asks whether a real street address in this state is staffed during working hours and whether the person there accepts what a process server puts in their hand. That is the whole test, and it is scored the same at $249 as it is at $90.

That is $150 a year staying in the business, which is $150 pointed at something that grows it.

Who Louisiana Actually Lets Hold the Seat

Before the money, the eligibility, because Louisiana's list is unusual. La. R.S. 12:1308 recognizes three kinds of registered agent for an LLC: an individual who is a citizen of Louisiana and resides here; a partnership or professional law corporation admitted to practice law in this state; or a corporation or an LLC, homegrown or from out of state, that holds authority to do business here.

That middle category is close to a Louisiana exclusive. Go looking through other states' agent statutes and you will rarely find law practices named as a class of their own. The same section carries a requirement with more bite than it first appears to have: your LLC must maintain a Louisiana registered office continuously, and the law treats that registered office as the company's domicile for all purposes. The address you file is not administrative furniture. It is where your company legally lives.

How a Louisiana LLC Moves the Appointment Away From LegalZoom

The instrument is the Change of Registered Office or Agent, catalogued at number 983 on the Secretary of State's forms and fee schedule. Here is the sequence in full.

1. Engage the replacement first. You cannot name a Louisiana agent who has not agreed to serve, so the hiring has to come before the filing. Sign up with us and we open your file the same day.
2. Fill in form #983. Entity name, the agent information being replaced, and the incoming agent's name plus a physical Louisiana street address. If the registered office is moving too, this one form handles both.
